C'est vs Il/Elle Est

The classic English-speaker trap: "il est un docteur" instead of "c'est un docteur." Four levels — identifying vs. describing, general comments vs. specific things, the classic traps, and a mixed review. No typing — every answer is a tap.

The Rule

C'est = identifying (this is what/who it is). Il/Elle est = describing (this is what it's like).

Use c'est when: there's a noun with an article — c'est un médecin, c'est mon ami, c'est la vérité; you're making a general comment — c'est difficile, c'est important, c'est vrai; or reacting — c'est magnifique !

Use il/elle est when: it's just an adjective, no article — il est intelligent, elle est grande; a profession with no article — il est médecin, elle est professeure; a nationality — elle est française; or you're describing a specific thing already named — ce livre ? il est intéressant.

Quick test: see an article (un, une, le, la, mon…) in front of the noun? → c'est. Just a bare adjective or profession? → il/elle est.

The classic trap: ✗ il est un docteur — wrong, an article can never follow il/elle est. ✓ c'est un docteur or ✓ il est docteur — both right.
